Axl Rose, named William Bruce Rose Jr., was born in Lafayette, Indiana on Feb. 6, 1962. He is the son of Sharon and William Rose. In his childhood he expressed his love of music by singing in church and learning to play piano. He developed his expansive vocal range as part of his high school’s chorus, and later sang with his first band, which included a young drummer named Jeff Isbell, who would later change his name to Izzy Stradlin and help to form the original Guns N´ Roses lineup. In 1986, he legally changed his name to W. Axl Rose and had the name tattooed on his arm.
Axl left home at a young age and moved to Los Angeles hoping to start a career in music in the rock-friendly city. He sang for a number of local rock bands, eventually forming Guns N´Roses with Tracii Guns, with whom he had been in the band L. A. Guns. Guns N’ Roses was formed in March 1985. The band was a merge of two bands: L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. The band members at this point were Axl, Tracii Guns, Ole Beich and Duff McKagan.
After a number of line-up changes, the band settled with Rose on vocals, Slash on lead guitar, Izzy Stradlin on rhythm guitar, Duff McKagan on bass and Steven Adler on drums. By 1986, G N’ R had attracted the attention of the major labels, and after signing to Geffen Records the following year, they released their debut album, Appetite for Destruction (1987) and in the following years, further recordings were released. But with fame came a lot of crises – it appeared as though the more successful they became, the more problems arose. The band was characterized by a permanent change of members. Nevertheless G N`R didn`t officially break up and in 2004 Axl Rose reappeared with a host of new bandmates and toured in North America, Europe and Asia for severeal years. In 2008 the long-rumored album Chinese Democracy was released. Guns N´Roses was inducted into the Rock an Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, but Rose did not attend.
